Safety Device without Hose Socket - Flame Failure Device FAQs

What does the Gasolec flame failure device do?

It senses the presence of a flame and stops gas from being released to the burner if the flame extinguishes. This safety feature usually works via a thermocouple signal that maintains the device in an open state when heated; once the thermocouple cools down, the device closes to cut off the gas supply.

How does the Gasolec flame failure device work (thermocouple, magnet/coil, valve)?

A flame failure system usually has three key parts: a thermocouple that creates a tiny electric signal when it gets hot, a magnetic coil or electromagnet that keeps the valve open, and the valve itself. When the flame is burning and the thermocouple is hot, the signal powers the magnet, letting gas flow; if the flame goes out and the thermocouple cools down, the signal stops and the valve shuts, cutting off the gas.

Why do I have to hold the button down on a Gasolec or Alke Flame Failure Device when lighting the heater?

Because the safety device needs time for the thermocouple/sensor to heat up and generate enough signal to keep the gas valve open. Light the heater by holding a flame near the thermocouple/sensor and press the button on the safety device for at least 15 seconds, once the sensor is warm, it keeps the gas flow going.

What are the symptoms of a faulty safety device or coil?

A common sign is that the heater lights while you hold the button, but goes out when you release it. This can be caused by a problem with the safety device, the coil, or the thermocouple, so it’s best to troubleshoot safely

Which one do I need - 70117 (PU117) or 70115 (PU115)?

Choose PU117 if you’re replacing the coil only inside the safety system.
Choose PU115 if you’re replacing the whole safety device (flame failure device).
