What batteries does the Hotline Shrike use, and how do I power it?

The Shrike operates on two internal D-cell batteries (3V) or can use an external 12V battery with the optional E47BL1 lead. Battery connections and polarity details are provided in the official installation guide (D-cells are located inside the case; the 12V battery connects to the base terminals). Typical battery life is approximately 6–8 weeks when using 3V D-cells, and about 4 weeks between charges on a 12V battery, depending on factors such as fence load, vegetation, and weather conditions.

How much fence can a Hotline Shrike power?

The Shrike is rated for up to 800m of fence in ideal conditions, designed for small paddocks or strip‑grazing use.
Output is 0.03J (with 0.04J stored), and the no‑load output voltage is 9,500V.

How and where can I mount it, and does it support solar assist?

The Shrike has a unique hanging case: it can hang from the fence line, a post, or an earth stake. There are two modeal, one with and one without a dedicated solar panel.

What animals and applications is the Hotline Shrike suitable for?

This device is designed as a convenient, low-powered, portable unit suitable for small paddocks and strip grazing, typically for horses, ponies, or pets. It is not intended for use with electrified nets (such as those for poultry) because of its low joule rating.

What basic troubleshooting and grounding do I need to remember for a Hotline Shrike?

Aim for at least 3kV on the fence line to ensure effective control; if the voltage is lower, first inspect the earthing and look for any vegetation or leaks. The Shrike’s pulse LED should blink with each pulse; you can also perform a quick “flash test” by briefly separating the clipped leads to check that the unit is pulsing.
