The robust, broad-spectrum formula of Virkon® AQUATIC has been scientifically designed to fulfill the pathogen control requirements of contemporary fish and shrimp farming operations. Whilst some disinfectants are effective against pathogens, they may also leave harmful residual toxicological effects on surfaces and equipment.

The oxygen-based chemistry contains organic salts and acids, and its active ingredient decomposes rapidly by a variety of routes within the environment, breaking down to form the naturally occurring substances, potassium salts and oxygen.

What is Virkon® Aquatic and how is it different from Virkon® S?

Virkon® Aquatic is a formula designed specifically for aquaculture settings. It contains lower detergent amounts, no added fragrance, and includes a food-safe indicator dye, making it safe for fish and other aquatic creatures. Unlike Virkon® S, which is used in livestock environments, Virkon® Aquatic is meant solely for use in aquatic situations.

How do I prepare and apply Virkon® Aquatic?

Before using, mix the powder or tablets with clean water (never use the powder dry). Typical working concentrations are 0.5%, 1.0%, or 2.0%, with 1.0% being the most common. Apply the solution to surfaces, equipment, boots, nets, and footbaths, and let it sit for 10 minutes. The solution stays good for up to 7 days, but it’s best to replace it daily if it gets dirty.

Is Virkon® Aquatic safe for both users and the environment?

When dissolved in a solution, it doesn’t irritate the skin or eyes and has little effect on the environment. However, the powder is corrosive, so you need to wear protective gear like gloves and goggles when handling it. The active components break down quickly into potassium salts and oxygen.

Can Virkon® Aquatic be used directly in water with fish present?

Yes, using really low amounts (2–4 ppm) helps cut down pathogens in water systems, but it’s not for treating the fish—it cleans the surroundings. Using it all the time might stress out biological filters if you don’t handle water changes properly.
