Also known as a flame failure sensor, this cuts off the gas if the flame extinguishes.

Thermocouples are delicate items, if they are tightened too much the contact points can easily be damaged.
The correct way to do this is:

Tighten the nut on the thermocouple as much as one can by hand
Then use an 8mm spanner to turn the nut 60deg, or 1/6th of a turn more

I have a Gasolec M5/M8 — is PU150 the right thermocouple?

Usually no: M5/M8 models often use a longer thermocouple (commonly shown as ~330mm in M8 parts documentation), so PU150 (250mm) may be too short.
If in doubt, check your heater model and the length on the old thermocouple (or send us a photo), because Gasolec thermocouple selection varies by model.

How do I know if my PU150 thermocouple is failing?

Common symptom: the heater lights while you’re holding the safety button, but goes out when you release it (because the sensor isn’t “proving” the flame properly).
Because the thermocouple is the “sensor”, issues here often show up as poor “staying lit” behaviour.
