How do I set up and electrify the Gallagher Smart Fence?

The Smart Fence is designed for quick installation—up to 100m can be deployed in around 5 minutes.

To electrify:

From a permanent fence: Attach a lead-out cable from the live wire to the Smart Fence end post
From a portable energizer: Connect the red lead to the Smart Fence end post and the green lead to the earth stake

When joining two Smart Fence units, loop the top wire of the second unit around the main post of the first to create electrical contact.

What animals can a Gallagher Smart Fence contain and how should they be trained?

Suitable for sheep, goats, and cattle in rotational grazing or temporary paddocks.
Training is critical: Start inside a secure permanent enclosure so animals learn to respect the fence. Allow them to investigate and receive a mild shock; this process may take a few days.

Is it possible to extend or customize the Smart Fence?

Yes, it is possible to link several Smart Fence units to cover extended distances. The posts and wires can be adjusted to suit uneven ground or various types of animals. The lower wire can be moved to minimize grounding issues in areas with tall grass or dry soil.

What are common issues with a Gallagher Smart Fence and how do I troubleshoot them?

Low voltage usually happens because of bad grounding or plants brushing against the wires
If a wire breaks, tie a small reef knot that can go through the reel system
For sagging wires, use the built-in tensioners to keep the tension steady
Make sure to regularly inspect for damaged insulators and check that ground rods aren’t corroded

Which energizer do you recommend, and how much power will it require?

Any Gallagher energizer is capable of powering the Smart Fence, but selection should consider:

Animal type: Bigger or untrained animals need energizers with higher joule output.
Fence length: Longer fences demand more powerful energizers.

Solar models such as the S12 or S200 are commonly chosen for portable installations.
