Racan Claw Mole Trap FAQs

How do I set a Racan Claw Trap?

  1. Insert the trigger plate into the middle of the trap, aligning it with the setting arm
  2. Squeeze the trap togther so that the claws are in position, then pull the setting arm over, and insert it into the hole in the trigger plate.
  3. Slowly release the pressure, letting the setting arm take the load, your trap is now set.

How do I use a Racan Claw Mole Trap?

Keep an eye out for mole activity by spotting fresh soil on molehills. Don’t put the trap directly in a molehill, instead, poke the ground nearby with a stick to find a tunnel. When the stick goes through the soil, you’ve found a tunnel. Use your finger to figure out which way it runs.

Set the trap on the surface, aligned with the tunnel’s direction. Use a knife to mark the area around the trap, then lift the turf and soil to reveal the tunnel. Firmly press the trap into the soil with the trigger plate just above the tunnel floor.

Sprinkle a bit of soil inside the tunnel and around the trap and trigger plate, then put the turf back on top to block any light from getting in.

The mole will think the tunnel collapsed and try to clear the soil, naturally pushing upward and triggering the trap. Don’t forget to mark where you put the traps.

Tips

  • Rub soil on the trap before setting it to remove any scent
  • Never wash a trap that has caught a mole
  • Rub the scent from caught moles into other mole tunnels and set the trap there
  • Check them every day

Which are most popular, Tunnel or Claw Traps?

Both tunnel (Duffus) traps and claw/scissor traps are commonly used, but tunnel traps are generally seen as the classic choice and are most popular in the UK, while scissor/claw traps are especially favoured by professionals and home gardeners.

Tunnel (Duffus) traps
These are among the oldest and most widely used mole traps in the UK. Many professional mole catchers prefer them for their reliability when set up properly. A tunnel trap is considered the most effective overall.

Claw / Scissor traps
Scissor traps are strong, easy to check, and popular for use in home gardens, especially in shallow, straight runs. They are among the most powerful and frequently recommended traps, particularly for general home use.

So, which is the most popular?
Tunnel (Duffus) traps are the most widely used overall, being the traditional choice and the go-to for professional mole catchers. Claw/scissor traps are the favourite for their ease of use and are highly rated by home gardeners and consumers.

Summary
For professionals and long-term success: Tunnel traps take the lead.
For home gardens and convenience: Claw/scissor traps are very popular.
