One of the main factors to consider when selecting your conductive material is visibility. For many animals, an electric fence serves as a psychological barrier, and they need to be able to see it to steer clear of it. This aspect also plays a role in colour selection, products with low visual impact from a human perspective are also much harder for animals to notice.
Tape is more frequently used in equine settings, as it provides the highest visibility and is often chosen as an alternative to conventional fencing. Many Hotline tapes feature thick polyurethane webbing with extra-thick edges to prolong the fence's lifespan. Poly tapes transmit power through thin metal conductors that run along their length. The greater the amount of metal in a fence line, the more effective it will be. Steel conductors offer a good balance between conductivity and tensile strength, while copper (typically nickel-plated) conducts electricity very well but has lower tensile strength.
Tapes that combine both materials aim to leverage the strength of steel while using copper to minimize the overall resistance of the product. Resistance is quantified in Ohms, and a lower Ohm value signifies that the product presents less resistance to the energy flowing through it, allowing the power to travel further.
When using a rope electric fence we recommend you also use a dedicated rope connector for joining which will act as a shear pint in case of accidents such as #075928
