Hotline Falcon Energiser | Battery Powered FAQs

What battery should I use with a Hotline Falcon Energiser, and how long will it last?

The Falcon HLB500 runs off a 12-volt external leisure battery that's portable and rechargeable. It can also use solar power to help extend the time between charges. A typical setup uses a 12V, 75Ah leisure battery; as a rough estimate, you might get about 4 weeks of use on the low setting with a 75Ah battery (though actual time depends on factors like fence load, vegetation, grounding, and weather). Checking the status is simple: there’s a pulse/low-battery LED that glows green when everything’s fine and red when the battery is low. If you connect the battery incorrectly, the unit will beep to warn you.

How much fence can the Falcon power, and what about nets?

Maximum fence length: up to 18km under optimal conditions.
Energy stored / delivered (High): 1.7J stored, 1.4J delivered; (Low): 1.37J stored, 0.96J delivered.
Nets (optimal conditions): supports up to 15 sheep nets or 4 poultry nets on High; up to 8 sheep nets or 2 poultry nets on Low.

When should you go for High versus Low power, and what voltage counts as “good” on the line?

Use High power during the first week while animals are getting used to the fence, or anytime you want to keep wildlife away. Once they’re trained, switch to Low power to save battery if the fence is doing its job.
A good rule is to have at least 3kV at several spots along the fence to keep things effective (check with a fence tester). If it’s less than that, check for faults, overgrown plants, or improve the grounding system.

What kind of grounding (earthing) do I need, and what comes included right out of the box?

Grounding: You should use at least one 1m earth stake; for longer or more "leaky" fences, you might need extra stakes placed a few metres apart, connected with insulated earth cable. Having good earthing is the top solution for low fence voltage.

Included features & leads: The Falcon includes fence and earth leads, 12V battery leads, a sturdy four-prong stand, On/Off and High/Low switches, and a pulse/low-battery indicator—plus a 5-year warranty if you register it.
