Gasolec S4 (Also known as the SA4) Gas Brooder with stainless steel filter. Gasolec brooders are widely known for their quality and reliability This steel unit is an efficient and easily installed solution to warming medium to large numbers of young birds. The metal air filter is easy to clean and maintain and an adjustable heat output allows the unit to operate at levels of between 3,000 and 6,500 btu (0.9/1.90kw) approx.

This Gasolec S4 brooder can warm 250 - 500 pheasant or hen chicks, depending upon the insulation of the shed and the clever design spreads heat evenly throughout the space.

This is our most popular model.

Gasolec started in the heating business with the production of the S-type, with its characteristic cast iron burner chamber and a ceramic burner plate. A successful heater still considered as a good, relatively inexpensive and reliable brooder for use on Game Farms. Around 3 million S-heaters have been produced so far and production continues

Gasolec S4 Heater 1.75kW with Stainless Steel Filter FAQs

What is the Gasolec S4’s heat output and gas consumption (propane vs natural gas)?

The S4 is a ceramic infrared brooder with a power rating of 1.75 kW (5,118 BTU/hr), and it can operate on either propane (LPG) or natural gas. When using propane, it usually consumes 126g/h. For natural gas, the flow rates vary between 0.158m³/h (high) and 0.189m³/h (low), depending on the jetting or version.

What gas pressure and regulator do I need?

The S4 is supplied for propane at 50–150 mbar. See 750150.

How many chicks will one Gasolec S4 cover?

Coverage varies widely with house insulation, ventilation, floor type and ambient temperature. Anywhere from 400 pheasant/hen chicks to 500 chicks, and up to 800 to 1,200 day‑old chicks for well‑insulated, favourable conditions. Treat these as indicative ranges, not guarantees.
Gasolec’s own guidance stresses that coverage is condition‑dependent; it’s best to size by temperature on the floor and add units as required.

What filters and routine maintenance does the Gasolec S4 need?

The S-series heater comes standard with a stainless-steel (SS) air filter, but if your set up is dustier, you can opt for a Heavy Duty (HD) filter instead. Cleaning the filter regularly—during the cycle by hand and a deep clean between cycles—helps avoid incomplete combustion and keeps the heater working well. The S4 model features a thermo-electromagnetic flame-failure safety device. To ensure safe and reliable use, it's a good idea to perform regular checks and consult the problem checklist in the S-series manual.

Wondering about installation and mounting height? Typically, the S4 is mounted about 70–90 cm above the floor, but you can adjust this to achieve your desired floor temperature and comfort. Always follow the S4/S-series manual for installation, ventilation, and safe commissioning. Remember, gas heaters need to be installed by a qualified gas installer, with proper ventilation and leak checks done before you start using it.

Why is my Brooder burning dull red and not giving the heat it used to, and why does my brooder have a ghostly blue flame below and coming out of the front of the reflector?

The gas and air are not mixing correctly. The cause could simply be dust in which case the filter needs to be cleaned and the brooder blown through with an air line. If the problem persists themnext step is to check the jet, which may be partially blocked. Jets can be cleaned out but never picked out. The easy way to clean a jet is to remove it from the brooder using an 8mm spanner and place the jet in a bottle with a little white spirit or cola drink. Shake the bottle well, remove the jet from the liquid and blow it out with an air line. Note that it is important to blow back towards the threaded end. Replace the jet. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. Check fo rleaks using soapy water. Bubbles mean a leak - if you see bubbles remake the joint using a gas approved sealant. Retest the brooder. If the problem persists then the regulator needs to be replaced. Check the pressure specification which will be stated on the data plate on the brooder. Ensure that the replacement reguator is of the correct pressure rating.

Why does my brooder go out when I release the red button?

The problem will be the thermocouple, which is attached to the back of the flame valve. The tip of the thermocouple is in the heat, and hen the brooder is lit the tip heats up and generates a small electrical current that energises the electromagnet inside the flame failure valve, remove it from the brooder and replace it.

Why does my brooder pop and go out?

The ceramic is either cracked or has moved on it's gasket. If the ceramic has cracked it will need to be replaced. If the ceramic is not cracked and has simply moved on it's gasket, it needs to be re seated on the fibre gasket. Ensure that the steel springs are in place and retighten the 4 screws using an 8mm spanner.

I have replaced the thermocouple, but the brooder still goes out when the red button is released, what should I check next?

The electromagnet inside the flame failure valve has become faulty and needs replacing. This s a gas joint and therefore after youhave replaced the electromagnet the joint must be checked ith soapy water. Bubbles mean a leak - if you see bubbles remake the joint using a gas approved sealant.

Why does my brooder go out when I turn down the regulator?

The regulator is faulty. It has probably been polluted with heavy-ends which is the name given to the muck that accumulates in gas cylinders over time and can build up in the regulator causing it to fail. The regulator needs to be replaced. Check the pressure specification which will be stated on the data plate on the brooder. Ensure that the replacement is of the correct pressure rating.
