Without a proper Earth System your energiser will not perform . Always use galvanised earth stakes.

Double 0.5metre earth stake with conduction comparable to a 1metre earth stake. Its length and design make its installation and removal much easier. This makes this earth stake an ideal solution for mobile devices powered by 9V battery, 12V battery or solar energy.

  • Double earth stakes 2 x 0.5m
  • Conduction equal to 1m earth stake
  • Easy installation and removal
  • Made of 8mm thick galvanised steel
  • Including 3m cable

Which earth stake should I use?

With Battery energisers use a 1.0m Earth Stake, and with Mains energisers use a 2.0m Earth Stake.

To improve the earthing of Dry-cell battery-units use the 0.5m stake (c/w 3m of wire)

Gallagher Galvanised Double Earth Stake inc 3m cable | ST | FAQs

Why do I need to earth an electric fence?

Having good earthing is really important for your fencing to work right. Electric fencing works as a circuit with current flowing through it. The current travels through the conductor, then through a person, animal, or plants to the ground, and comes back to the energiser through the earth peg. Dry or rocky ground doesn’t conduct the current well, so it’s key to use the recommended number of earth pegs and check that the earthing is enough. If the connection between the earth and the energiser isn’t solid, your electric fence won’t work properly.

It also finishes the circuit so animals actually get a shock. The energiser sends a high-voltage pulse along the fence; when an animal touches the live wire, the current flows through the animal into the ground and comes back to the energiser through the earth stake. If the earth connection isn’t good, the circuit stays open, and the shock is weak or doesn’t happen at all.

It controls how strong the shock is and how well the fence works daily. Bad earthing is the main reason for “low volts on the fence” and fences that don’t keep animals in properly. Fixing the earth system usually brings back full fence voltage and makes animals respect the fence again.

It keeps people, animals, and your energiser safe. A good ground path helps get rid of surges and cuts down on stray-voltage problems; combined with a lightning diverter, it also gives surges a safe way to go to earth instead of passing through the energiser.

What exactly is it, and when would I pick the “double earth stake” instead of a regular rod?

The Gallagher Galvanised Double Earth Stake is a handy, portable grounding kit made up of two 0.5 m galvanised stakes with a 3m lead. It’s designed to have similar conductivity to a single 1m earth stake, making it easier to drive in and remove—perfect for mobile or temporary setups like battery or solar systems. Gallagher usually suggests shorter stakes for battery or portable energisers and longer ones for mains units (like 1m for 12V/battery devices and 1.7–2.0m for mains energisers). So, the double 0.5m stakes are great for mobile energisers, while fixed mains systems generally go for longer rods.

How do I install a Gallagher double earth stake for best performance?

When installing a multi-rod earth system, drive the stakes into consistently moist soil (as damp ground enhances conductivity) and space the earth rods approximately 3 m apart.

In conditions where the soil is dry, rocky, or frozen, consider using an earth-wire return fence design (with one wire earthed in the fence) to ensure shock effectiveness despite poor soil contact.

For safety reasons, avoid placing the earth system within about 10 m of power, telecom, or other utility earths to prevent stray currents and interference.

Does a Gallagher double earth stake actually work as well as a 1 m rod, and is it built to last?

Yes, they have conduction equal to a 1m earth stake, and are made from 8mm galvanised steel to last a long time, it also comes with a 3m cable for quick connection—designed especially for mobile 9V/12V solar energisers when you’re often changing locations.

How many earth stakes do I need for my energiser?

For small battery-powered or portable energisers, a single earth stake measuring 0.5 to 1 metre is usually adequate; a pair of 0.5 metre stakes can provide the equivalent of 1 metre in a compact setup.

For mains-powered units, DaltonSupplies.com recommends using longer stakes (at least 1.7 to 2.0 metres) and multiple rods; for instance, a minimum of three 2-metre stakes spaced 3 metres apart is advised for Gallagher M150/M300/M500-class energisers—similar scaling applies for larger devices.
