Mandatory Cattle EID from January 2027: What You Need to Do Now

The UK government has confirmed that from January 2027, all cattle born in England must be identified with an electronic identification (EID) ear tag. This is one of the biggest changes to cattle record-keeping in a generation, and it has implications for every beef and dairy farm in England — regardless of herd size.

If you're reading this in 2026, you have less than twelve months to prepare. Here's what you need to know and — importantly — why acting now rather than waiting is the smart financial move.

What Does Mandatory Cattle EID Actually Mean?

Electronic identification (EID) tags contain a microchip that stores a unique 15-digit animal identification number. Unlike a conventional visual tag that you read by eye, an EID tag can be scanned electronically — from a distance of up to a metre, in the dark, through mud, in under a second.

From January 2027, all new-born calves in England must have an EID tag applied as one of their two compulsory ear tags (replacing one of the two standard visual tags). Existing animals already tagged with visual-only tags are not required to be re-tagged. The mandate applies to new births.

The government's rationale is biosecurity. EID enables faster, more accurate tracing of animals in the event of a disease outbreak. The 2001 foot-and-mouth crisis — which cost the UK economy £8 billion — is the backdrop that drives this policy.

What Equipment Do You Actually Need?

To read EID tags at the crush for your own management records and for official movement documentation, you need an EID reader. The two options in the Gallagher range are:

  • HR4 handheld EID reader: A rugged, waterproof stick reader that reads standard cattle EID tags. Pairs with any Gallagher TW-series weigh head to link tag numbers automatically to weight records.
  • HR5 handheld EID reader: The upgraded model with wider reading range and improved ergonomics. Better for larger herds or extended weighing sessions.
  • TWR-5 integrated panel reader: For large commercial operations, the TWR-5 weigh head includes a built-in panel reader that reads tags automatically as the animal stands in the crush — no manual scanning required.

If you're buying a new weighing system this year, build in the EID reader from the start. The incremental cost of adding EID capability now is far lower than retrofitting it later.

Why Act Now Rather Than Waiting Until 2027?

The EID mandate is an obligation. But there's a major financial incentive to act before it becomes compulsory: the FETF 2026 grant scheme.

The Farming Equipment & Technology Fund (FETF) 2026 provides 50% funding on eligible EID and weighing equipment — including EID readers, weigh heads, and load bars. Applications close on 28 April 2026. That is a firm deadline. If you're reading this before then, you can claim 50% of your system cost from the government.

Farmers who wait until 2027 to equip for EID compliance will pay full price. Farmers who act now pay half. The same equipment. The same installation. Half the cost. There is genuinely no financial logic in waiting.

What About the Animal Performance App?

This is the part of the EID story that most farmers underestimate. An EID reader doesn't just scan tags for compliance — it links each animal's tag number to a permanent electronic record. Every weight, every treatment, every movement can be attributed to that individual animal, automatically, for its entire life.

The Gallagher Animal Performance App provides the cloud-based platform where all of this data lives. It's free with every TW-series weigh head purchase, and it transforms the value of the data you're already collecting.

Think about the management decisions that become easier when you have accurate individual weights for every animal in your herd, recorded every time you work them through the crush:

  • Dosing accuracy: the right dose every time, based on actual weight not estimated weight
  • Sale timing: weigh out at exactly the right finish weight, every time
  • Performance identification: flag the poor doers early, before they cost you more margin
  • Breeding decisions: data-backed selection, not guesswork
